Artist Expo July 2011

Busy in the booth

Hey everyone, haven’t meant to leave you all hanging the last two weeks but we were so overwhelmed with the success of Artist Expo that at the end of the day we were worn out! Artist Expo was a hit thanks to founder Tim Mulvey.

All three classes that I taught were well received and the student’s response was positive.

Teaching Tropic Queen

We’ve been in the colored pencil business for 16 years now and the popularity is still increasing!

If you were unable to make it to the trade show, the two classes that I taught are now available for purchase as tutorials Tropic Queen and  Headed South.  Make plans to attend next years Artist Expo Houston June 26th-30th 2012 in The Woodlands, Texas.

Although the Kansas weather wasn’t cool enough to get excited about returning to, I was anxious to see my granddaughter Norah.  This is the longest I’ve been away from her since she was born and I missed her so much!

Well it’s back to work.  I have deadlines to meet for The Decorative Painter and PaintWorks magazines.  Watch the website because I will be posting pictures of those three colored pencil projects.

Flee to the Mountains

   Posted by: admin

My latest colored pencil project.

Flee to the Mountains © Janelle Johnson 2011

This painting was done with the aid of several photos that Jeff, my husband, took while we were in Canada. The cougar is from the Toronto Zoo and the lake is high up in the Canadian Rockies.

It’s penciled on a piece of 11″x 14″ Wood Thrush hand-dyed paper. The coarse textured paper is perfect for obtaining the fur!

Mary Gibilisco has asked me to teach it in a seminar Friday, August 19, 2011. I’ll also teach the His & Her Orioles below on Saturday and Sunday, August 20 & 21.

Once again, Jeff took the great photo of the male oriole, and Sue Cutler, Blencoe, IA, took the companion photo of the female oriole. The picture wraps around the yarn container and you can see the other sides on Mary’s website. I sold these yarn containers all around the country as we traveled in 2010 and I don’t have any left, but the penciling can be done on brown kraft paper adhered to any surface that you’d like.

Caribbean Cruise Seminar

   Posted by: admin

I’ll be documenting my travel teaching so that you’ll know exactly what a seminar is and how much fun they can be – as well as educational!

This was my first cruise seminar and what fun it was! Mary Gibilisco and Ann Kingslan also taught classes so the students had a full 3-days of classes while we were out at sea. We also had island excursions to San Juan Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St Maarten.

We’ll be doing another cruise seminar March 7-13, 2010 in the Western Caribbean – check the website for details.
